What is a “DOPP” Kit?

First produced (patented in 1938) by Charles Doppelt, a leather goods designer who immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the early 1900s. Although it may have been Doppelt’s nephew and employee, Jerome Harris, who actually invented the snazzy leather toiletries case, Doppelt was the boss and so the finished product bore a cropped form of his name, giving us the ‘Dopp Kit.’ Dopp Kits were manufactured by the Charles Doppelt Company until the firm was purchased by Samsonite in the 1970s.

The popularity of Dopp Kits was evidently boosted considerably by World War II, in the course of which the U.S. Army issued them to recruits by the millions.

The registration for “Dopp Kit” was cancelled in March 2003 when no one filed a required (Section 8) Declaration of Continued Use, but the required declarations have been filed for “Dopp”. The marks were assigned to DHP Limited Partnership (dba Buxton) in 1990; the current owner of the “Dopp” trademark is listed as Buxton Acquisition Co., LLC, of Chicopee, Massachusetts.

typically a dopp kit is given as a gift for a younger male entering manhood or an older man as the perfect “Dude gift”

while we cant call ours a “Dopp kit” it most certainly is full of awesome manliness!
